Hi all,
I am looking at replacing an old HP inkjet printer. It's main functions will be business orientated, eg.: printing invoices, statements, bank statements, etc. I am looking for something that will print reasonable quality, in good times, and be economical.

I can get the HP CP1215 for R1,999.00, but it seems like the toner cartridges are quite pricey at around R650 each for 4 colours @ ± 1400 page yield. I don't know what that is like in real-world terms.

Please recommend some printers, any brand, inkjet/laser... but please give some justification why.

we've worked with many different printers over the years through from the totally crap lexmarks, to the hp printers that has a tendency to jam ever so often and even epsons with poor print quality

personally, i would go for the canon brand.

but it depends entirely on what your specific needs are, if it's only black&white printing that you're gonna be doing then go for a laser printer.

Yes, Canon - Got myself a Pixma iP4500 - The print quality is fantastic and you can print directly onto discs. The only problem is the cost of replacing the ink. about R300 more and you can just as well throw away the printer and buy a new one that comes with the ink! - other than that LOVE Canon and won't go HP again!

Will be printing a lot of B/W, but also a lot of colour, mainly green (corporate colour).

Will have a look at the Canon's.

you will be going through lots of blue and yellow - at least with the canon you can replace individual tanks so ink wastage isn't much of a problem

Here's a article which speaks about different printers and how to work out your cost by using the yield and paper cost as a base:
http://www.pcsupporttips.com/pc-peripherals/printer_cost_per_page_31.html

We've got a Samsung Laser and we've been refurbishing the Toner as of late. New Toner costs R1200 excl. delivery and we refurbish it for about half that.

Here's the math:

R100 for paper, 500 pages in a pack of paper: 100/500 = 20cents
Toner yield and Toner cost.

Toner cost: R700 Toner Yield: 1500

700/1500= 46cents

20 + 46 = 66cents per page ;)

Work it out :p

We pay about 30cents per page (that includes both sides printed, printer has a duplexer).

Edit: I see the link I gave sucks, it doesn't give the math. But read the page about Laser Toners. Shaking things about really does work! :p
