Using Pidgin http://pidgin.im/ with the Bonjour protocol http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows.html is a P2P chat solution. Not sure about group chat - but you can try it out.

All free and cross platform.

Avoid from serverless instant messaging applications for your LAN only if you have a small number of computers. Since p2p messengers send messages as broadcast packets you get a great number of useless data delivered over the network.

Look on server-based IM / Chat systems which also offers you an offline messaging and file transfer, logging and archiving delivered data. Why pay for less?!
