After a long and painful 2 years my upgrade is finally here meaning I can finally ditch my slow and cumbersome BB 9780 and grab a proper smartphone that is a little bit less headache inducing.

Seeing as though I've been with Vodacom for more than a decade I've decided that it's time to drop these scum and opt for hopefully greener pastures. Judging by the positive feedback on MyBB and the highly competitive data bundles, my first choice alternate provider would be Cell C followed by 8ta. My only real concern with moving to Cell C or 8ta is coverage. Will I experience some coverage issues with these guys as compared to Vodacom/MTN?

I'm currently on a TopUp 315 because I like the control it offers i.e. knowing exactly how much airtime I am allocated each month and being able to recharge as I see fit. I also avoid those surprisings bills at the end of the month.

I wouldn't mind sticking to a Top-up type of situation but judging by posts from other members it's seems the better option would be to port my number to prepaid and just purchase the data bundles separately thus avoiding a lock-in contract. Only downside to this is that I would then have to buy the handset cash (which I don't really have) or get it through FNB as others have done.

Also, how much data could I expect to use on average per month? I have an ADSL line at home and have the wifi going so I will only use the data bundle away from home. I'm not a social network junkie and I rarely access the web on my current Blackberry except for the occasional youtube video and sports news although I'm pretty sure once I'm not restricted by Vodacoms horrible BIS speeds, and have a shiny new S3 or Lumia 920 (if I can somehow manage to wait that long) with all the nice apps, I'll be accessing the internet a whole lot more.

Advice please...:p

Fanx.

Best advice that can be given for coverage is to go and get your self a pre-paid Cell C/8ta sim, load some airtime and go test it in the areas where you want it to work. Cheap and very accurate test :D

On Cell C you have complete flexibility between choosing between topup vs traditional contract and you can choose the amount each month. What I have is a R30 month-to-month topup and I just add airtime as needed on a Galaxy SIII. This gives complete flexibility and control of spending. Also this way you are not locked in in any way. The other members are incorrect. It is awesome.

I also got my phone via FNB. It is awesome.

Total spend is less than R300pm usually.

Very difficult to say how much data you will use, that is up to you. I use about 50mb per month cause I'm always on wifi at home and work.

All I can say is do yourself a favour and go with Cell C month-to-month if you have the required reception. You won't regret it!
