I'm looking to do a defensive driving course early next week if you could please recommend a few in the Gauteng region.

Ones preferably where I can get a certificate to take to the insurance and get a discount on my premium :)

I stand corrected but I believe as far as insurance goes BMW offers the best driving courses, around R1000.
Its held at Zwartkops

Audi used to have a course, but closed it down.

Wanting to book only a week beforehand is pushing it a little bit.

But yes you should have plenty of options up in Gauteng.

Sadly Audi have now stepped out of the game, had very good experience with their courses.

Speak to Dave Johnson Institute of Advanced motoring - the best all round course in SA - they use the same format as the high speed driver training given to the police in the UK.

I did the course and then went on and added high speed driver training to it - you will get a certificate and a reduction for your insurance - HIGHLY recommended!

Yeah been in training most of the week. if i can't find anything will just have to it another time.

I called the VW people and no bookings.

the BMW number doesn't work. Sent them an email.

Gonna try FAZDA's link next.

+1 for the VW course. Very well done and the instructors are very good. Only small niggle is that they can't do control recovery very well as the GTI 7 uses an electronic handbrake

+1 for the VW course. Did the full-day course last month. Might battle getting in though, I believe they are quite booked.

Managed to come right with the BMW course. Thanks guys.

Please keep us posted on the cost of the course and the savings the insurance will provide.

I am keen on doing this if it is worth the premium repayments on the insurance.

Don't waste your time with a defensive course, Chevron. If you are going to pay, rather do the Track Driving one and have a fscking blast chucking a fast car around Kyalami/Zwartkops. I did one 2 weeks ago, send the certificate through to Discovery and got a discount.

I don't agree - it's all very well having a high speed course and pretending that you are Schumacher for the day - does sweet bugger all to teach you how to drive correctly and defensively in day to day driving.

If you are going to pay your own money to save a few hundred a month on insurance (sometimes less), then rather go do the High Performance Driving course which includes skidpan. Understanding vehicle dynamics, the car and your own limitations, and learning what happens when you move beyond them, is going to make you by far a better driver. Most people are unfortunately nervous behind the wheel.

Oh and do try and take the Golf R if you do the VW one and ask whether Gennaro Bonafede is available as an instructor. You wont be sorry.

The high performance course is double the price, but definitely something I'd like to do one day.

one problem I have with these courses where they give you a car to do the course is the following.

Its great to go 280 kph through a skidpan with an M3 but it does not teach you what your car will do when it is in the same situation.

I can understand that the principles are the same in any condition but what your polo can do and what the Golf R can do is obviously not the same and does react different.

But lets not digress.

Please keep us posted on the discount you get from the insurer when you are done.

I would really like to know if it is worth it so that I can go do it myself.

Insurance depends on the car.. But Outsurance dropped my premium by 10-20 % for both the defensive and high performance courses. Dropped from about 1,500 to 900 for a Renault Sandero (as a 21 year old who got license at 20) so I don't think it's bad at all

So it might be worth the effort and money spent to obtain a bit of a discount.

In the long run it will pay for it self then

It's worth it just for the fun of it :)

Really wanna do the high performance now.
