Recommendation on a Geyser Timer

Hey guys. I got one of the Major-Tech timers on special at Builders at the moment. It doesn't seem to naturally fit on a CBI board though? Any suggestions for an easy fix for this?

You need to go and buy a short length of DIN rail and then pop rivet that to a MCB fitting plate. The new timer will then connect to the DIN rail.

If you have a dishwasher then turn your geyzer down to 55 degrees (72 default).
That alone will save you around R200 pm.
Then switch it off manually for 18 hours a day and save another R150 pm.

Hi all

I see everyone is still going about the old geyser system ,does anyone ever tried the tank less water heater ? if so how much poer does it consume ?

A tankless water system will basically only use the power for heating the water that you use - so you eliminate the standing losses.

The same thing can be done by installing a VERY small geyser... which also have smaller losses... or installing a very efficient geyser. But at least then you get to keep the 'buffer' (hot water during load-shedding), and you don't get the ... cold/hot/cold cycle you often get from instant boilers.

Yup - that makes some sense. If you only use water at 70 degrees for washing dishes... (which I would argue is still waaay to hot!), then having a dishwasher (with it's own internal heater) means you can turn down the temperature on your geyser.

After you've turned it down (occasionally turning it back up to 70 just in case of legionella!), the standing losses could be reduced a tad (maybe by 25%, on a 3kwh/day standing loss = c. R50/month?)... you shouldn't need the timer as well on top of turning it down? Your geyser should be doing that itself at that point. By switching it off for 18 hours per day, you're basically telling it to only heat to 55 degrees, but then making it colder yourself manually...

Wirefree, what solution did you come up with.

I installed the same timers as you several years ago, mainly to balance the load as I have two geysers and if both are running together and other things in the house are going at the same time like kettle, dryer etc, it tripped the main circuit breaker. Secondary reason was hopefully to save some money.

Having replaced these timers several times before and one is clicking as you described, I too am looking for a better solution, otherwise it simply isn't cost effective to keep replacing timers, plus my timers are up in the roof next to the geysers as there was no place for them on the DB.

The type of timer is an analogue version. It has a wheel where you choose time slots and the beauty is that these are not affected by frequent power outages in terms of damage to the circuit. The downside is that most don't have a battery so you have to readjust when the power's been out for a while.

Hi Hilton

That makes sense.
Going to have to grab the ladder each time to get through the trapdoor when we have power outages to adjust the timers.
Otherwise chop a small DB board into the wall next to the existing one to install the timers and trip switches for easy access and adjustment.

Such a shame these Electronic Timers are so gimpy.

BTTB.

Also think about a type of geyser wise device
Nice bit about it you have display to program it , also see temperature of water
Sometimes the timers blow because element draws too much amps for its contacts (can be solved via a contactor )

I have a Geyserwise installed on a solar system, been running for four years now.

How's everyone's timer going ? I'm in need of one now, any recommendations?

I posted this tin foil hat video in the Smartkit thread yesterday.

I agree. :) Owning a Sonoff device or two, my opinion is that it's not quite for general public use without considering some of the topics discussed in the video.

Yea, first-off he's from Canuckistan (Canada to you), and quite vocal about it. And he's rather more knowledgeable than this review would indicate; methinks that he did this one with a particular point of view in mind. That said, while wide-ranging, his knowledge and skillsets obviously have limits and may be a factor here (too). Also he panders to his audience for effect.

As to what TO get: unsexy (and set-and-forget) AF - old faithful, the HellermanTyton TDDGT. To be avoided (unless you like misery and frustration), the CBi Touch [-]POS[/-] QAT-TRDM (there are times that (even soft touch) REAL buttons are just way, way better)

Aah fake America :).

It explains why the accent didn't seem too obvious.

Look I also don't trust the Chinese in most regards. In this case I wouldn't be that paranoid that they want to overthrow the regime using smart switches though.

Then we need to disregard EVERYTHING that gets manufacturered in China, which is mostly everything then.

I would however flash with a different firmware not because of the Chinese but rather for pure local access so you don't need the internet for it.

R3750 for Geyserwise remote management system supply+ install. Sounds reasonable ?

After hours of googling, I came across this comment of yours, a good 7 years later. I am looking to install the geyserwise system on my solar heater, but cannot figure out where the thermostat would go, seeing as geyserwise supplies a probe type, whereas mine is a surface mounted thermostat.
