I am looking for a mid-range laptop for portable use. Since these can get expensive, does anyone have a recommendation for a cost-effective laptop with these specs:

Screen – minimum 900px resolution
Battery life – minimum 4.5 hours of actual usage, more would be netter
Processor – i5
OS – does not matter, will be installing my own

Budget. Always give a budget.

Also, size? 15" laptops are very portable for sane people but these days with ultrabooks and that Apple nonsense, those are apparently "too big".

What does 900px resolution mean? If you have a budget it's much easier to help you.

Thanks, there were some omissions in my post.

The budget is currently R15k or under. This may have to be revised upwards if there is nothing suitable at that price.

The screen size would be 13 to 15 inches.

900px resolution means a vertical resolution of 900 pixels as a minimum.

You can get great "work" laptops for that price, it's only gaming laptops that are retardedly expensive.

In that price range you shouldn't even waste your time with toys like an i5. Get a proper full HD display and a Core i7 CPU. You even get a GTX 850M

Those are super overweight for portable use, and quite thick

LOL. No.

If 2.7kg is too heavy then you're either a 98 year-old disabled lady or lying. And both are just over an inch thick.

As I said, I'll assume OP is sane. If not, buy one of those Apple thingies, or an Ultrabook, but you won't find them in this price range.

Thanks, some really good suggestions so far. I am busy reading up on these.

The weight does not worry me. The problem is more the bulk once the size gets to 17 inches.

That's why I posted 15 inch ones. 17 is a bit big for some but I find them great for typing on.
