So having had my R3k ASUS RT-N66U router delightfully taken out by lightning, do any of you people have recommendations on how to protect one's valuable hardware from mother nature?

Unplug before a storm.... That's the cheapest but most frustrating solution.

When I hear thunder or see thick clouds rolling through, I will unplug. Unplugged last night at around midnight. I have had too many devices taken out over the years.

There is a device guys were talking about on another thread somewhere here that auto disconnects the router though. Will try finding it for you.

Nothing can stop a direct hit.

On the lighter side, put up a sign which tell lightning which way to go.

yeah nothing will stop the lightning, so put a long pole away from the house so that there is something higher that the lightning can strike.

Clearline

Doesn't beat unplugging but I haven't lost a modem since installing one of their devices.

Edit:
I see they don't have my specific model anymore but there is a device that supports 10Mb/s ADSL.

I have lost most my equipment every year due to lightning. Last year I decided I had enough and spent about 3 - 4k on lightning protection, specifically Clearline etc. Earthing everything using proper earth rods. On Tuesday morning, lightning destroyed 80% of my equipment again. So yes, I think some of the lightning protection things work, but if you are hit directly then the lightning will still jump into your equipment.

The only time we've had a direct hit was while I was out and had taken my networking kit with me. As long as it's something powerful enough to stop the spikes on the line, it'll probably be ok

to do it correctly, earth your house, roof, correctly. I will also run the telephone line in a metal pipe which is earthed. But, it will cost to much.

I once heard, let your neighbor earth his stuff good, then hopefully the lightning goes to his house.
