Based on what I've seen here,
I would choose the XPeria Ray for R2995.
Because you said +- R3000 I'm not sure how far above R3000 you would go, but if I were in your position I would definitely want to add in the extra R615 for the Motorola Defy (R3610)

What would you like, big screen, small screen with buttons, fast CPU, gaming?
Are you buying it cash or taking on a contract, if contract list the options they give you and we can suggest what to avoid.

I currently have a Nokia 5800. I am looking for a touch screen and if possible with a qwert keypad.
I do not know if I will really be playing games on it. I want to get it without a contract.

If i wasn't so invested in Android I'd definitely give the Nokia windows phones a go.

To the OP, do you want a phone that has power or just a simple phone, reason I ask is the SE Xperia Mini is a cool phone but a little under powered for heavy duty applications.
Personally I don't like qwerty keyboards esp since I discovered swipe ability like my Touchpal as I can out swipe most people with physical keyboards.
If you buying cash the Xperia Ray as mentioned by Mouse is a good phone at that price and is also in line for the ICS update so might be worth a look, only problem for me is the fact that its to small. A better phone might be the HTC Desire S.
LOL Its not that easy, as Windows Phone can not do half the things I do with my Android but thats for another thread. I would still like to play with the latest models, last time I had a WP was back in the 7.0 days and it was just one step better than an actual brick back then, Windows Phone 8 might even be better but I will wait and see what they come up with.

Are there any shops on the East Rand where you can look and test the cell phone to help you decide what phone to buy.
All the shops like MTN and Vodacom shops only have plastics models of the phones and you can’t actually test the before you buy them.

Yes that was quite fun. But nothing more than a silly marketing gimmick gone wrong.
I really think on the midrange end a windows phone is worth a think.
Not for a techie, but for the non techie you're going to advise.
For non techies I already advise that they get Apple. I already have to deal with enough kak when their Windows PC's start giving problems, I don't want to also deal with their mobile devices too *especially* when they complain that I advised them to buy those devices.
Simple example: What are you going to tell those non techie friends that you've advised to get WP7 when they want to change the phones background picture?

I think Wp7 is a good compromise between apple and Android.
And customizing the look of a phone is not high on some peoples list of priorities.
Functionality, Reliability, Integration, Battery life.

All fanboy views aside: Today I demoed my old Desire HD to a friend, the person is not a tech type but own an iPhone 3GS and a iPad 2, and during the conversation Windows Phone came up, as he was to renew his contract and hated BB+iOS
1st I showed him http://aka.ms/wpdemo to demo the WP interface and then later during the conversation I activated Launcher 7 on my Desire HD with other WP7 themed apps like People and Music. Well lets just say Microsoft just got a new client as he loved the idea and contacted his SP to placed a order for the Nokia Lumia 800.
So yes I get what the article is saying(that people like us tech-heads influence what people look at), its not just about the speed issue, well the speed part of the WP smoked drive is aimed at iOS users but also use simple design for people that don't want to spend hours to customize a phone.
For me Windows Phone will never work as I hate the limitations but for simple minded end-users the idea just works. Well we will see how he feels about it in the months to come.
