Any one out there that has moved from a frame relay WAN to ADSL? I administer a WAN connecting 11 sites all across SA. At our head office in JHB we maintain our own mail and web servers. The remote sites use frame relay to connect to JHB. We supply all mail and www access via a 128k leased line direct to SAIX out of our JHB site. We also use Terminal server and other thin client apps on the wan.

Have looked at a proposal from IS, put all our remote sites on ADSL to IS, connect JHB to IS.

Any past experiences and advice on this issue and possible service providers will be most welcome. The aim is to increase bandwith on the WAN, increase bandwith on the WWW side while not increasing the cost.

It will work but there is a caveat, there will be no SLA. IS cannot guarantee uptime outside of their own network as Telkom don't give any guarantees on ADSL. Also if a line goes down it could be a few days before it's fixed as neither are accountable (no SLA) and no amount of screaming at Telkom or IS will get it fixed quicker.

Reliability is an issue, so you need to consider having Iburst or MyWirless AND ISDN as a backup. All the branches can connect via VPN to your JHB site which could keep its Diginet line to the Internet (or move it all to a server hosted somewhere that has good rates). If you can handle a few slow downs and glitches in a week then it will work for you and save you a packet.
