Die Poort!
Morning to all.

We are looking to buy an eBook Reader as a gift. I am looking for recommendations / advice as I am not familiar with eBook readers as such. Requirement is only to use to read books (duh!). Budget is not more than R1k, but best bang for buck would be great.

Looking forward to hear from you.

I would reckon your best bet in South Africa at the moment is the Kobo from Pick n Pay.

For 1k that's pretty much all you can get. But it's a good option. I was playing with the Kobo, it's a really nice little thing.

Another recommendation for the Kobo. I bought my mom one, and she's extremely happy with it.

Can I load any pdf's onto the Kobo? Im busy studying at the moment and get all my study material online in pdf format. I'd prefer reading from a tablet to printing out the docs.

Yes it has PDF support but you need to see reviews to see how well it performs for that. PDF's can be fiddly beasties.

None of the eReaders are great for PDF. The main issue is that it is hard to zoom. You can't just enlarge the text like on a normal eBook, you have to convert them to an eBook format and then its not always great.

I just rotate them on the Kindle but its not ideal.

If you have an issue with white margin on a PDF though you can remove it in Acrobat Pro X. I...just found out :o

Whatever you do, if you are serious about wanting a dedicated reader, don't buy one of the several ultra-cheapie units around, as they generally have a standard backlit LCD screen rather than the much easier on the eyes e-ink, which is the whole point of a proper e-reader. The Kobo and all the Kindles (except the Fire) are proper e-ink readers.

Get the new kindle wifi black for around R1000 bidorbuy, have2have or wantitall

On A Side note get yourself calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/

Best way to manage all your books , and if you ahve a reader that can only read a few ways - just convert to the type you can use.

I bought myself a kindle and use this as a way to transfer books and manage them.

Also - I use http://www.smashwords.com/ to buy my e-books as it is DRM free.
