Recommended fibre router

Believe it or not they can actually handle over 500Mbps up and down, did a speed test not so long ago with one on a 1Gb line, even a 10 year old Telkom router maxed it's 100Mb WAN port on the 1Gb line

I find that really hard to believe. Even the EdgeRouterX which has a fair amount of memory and processing grunt behind it, needs to be tweaked in order to get full synchronous 500/500.

With a lower range device like this, with firewall, traffic management, dhcp services and wifi traffic management all turned on, It doesn't make logical sense that it would perform well at higher speeds.
 
I may swallow my words, the one article I came across says it has a 900Mhz Broadcom processor, so maybe....

Anyways, rather go with the 1Gbps version for a little more, otherwise the 1200Mbps wifi is not going to mean much when its throttled by the LAN port to 100Mbps ;)

No tweaks, in real world ER-X it will max 700Mbps download on the 1GB line in typical configuration (not 1Mbps as not all packets are 1500 bytes long). Just require one CLI command to enable hardware offloading. Some features cannot be offloaded (will use CPU), so know your hardware when planning.

After the VPNfilter incident I won't ever recommend a brand of router that doesn't have a team actively working on improving and updating their firmware. Most of these consumer brands just poop out cheap routers then never update the firmware after it's released.

This. One of the most important points here, and the reason I moved away from typical consumer routers.

A lot can do more than 500Mbps as per the benchmarks in those links....
Archer C7 top of the list doing 900Mb+ lan to wan and wan to lan...

FYI a R100 000 firewall with UTM features turned on struggles to do 400Mbps... (And turn every single UTM feature on and it barely does 100Mbps)
Cheap home routers does not have all those nifty features that tax a CPU, so that's why they will be faster than something that costs 10- 20 times it's price...

You can only reach 1Gbps aggregate (up and down (500/500, 900/100, 800/200 etc you get the idea) with the tweak I referred to that you called hardware offloading ;) (TOmato/TOHmAto)

That's like comparing a mining dump truck to a toyota twin cab? Afaik E-RX only has DPI, not UTM.
Also, corporate would not be running their Wifi authentication and traffic management through the firewalls.

Let's just stick with an apples to apples comparison shall we?

All I was pointing out, given the entry level point at which the Tenda was coming in at, I didn't think it could compare to the ER-X in a favourable manner, until I saw that the Tenda actually sports a really decent processor, which made me revise my view a little.

In the long term, it's better to buy a router that's going to last you a few years, than needing to replace one every year because your needs have changed.
e.g. I would buy the 1Gbps LAN device over the 100Mb, because that will definitely become too slow as you become used to fibre speeds.

Yes agree 100%

I did not like Tenda at all, their stuff was useless 10 years ago. Only when a friend bought one last year I realized they are now a hell of a lot better than they used to be, and actually better value for money than TP-Link and D-link.

Edgemax routers are in a different league yes, lots more features that these home all in one devices.

I don't use a all in one device at home anymore, use a entry level firewall, Fortigate 60E, and a Unifi AC LR for wifi, but would still recommend these Tenda's as they do work fine for 99% home users
