So I think I can finally afford the internets at home.

Im looking for a portable solution.
Something with a decent international cap.

Will mainly be surfing and downloading using torrents.

Willing to spend like R1000 or so p/m, maybe a lil more.

Any recommendations? I'd like something thats pretty reliable, not too slow, but the main thing is that it can handle torrents, tried and tested ^_^

TIA

ED:: Using a desktop and living in Melville, if that is relevant.

Wrong forum this is iBurst, poor browsing and download speeds rendering sites like You Tube and Facebook useless, no torrents, major shaping of just about every port, therefore VoIP can't be used effectively, frequent DNS and SMTP server issues therefore no sending of mail and or sites just not available on the network, need hardware firewall when connecting to the network as security protocols are ignored by iBurst tech therefore your pc will be infected by malware if you do not utilise a proper firewall, monthly changes of the backhaul ISP's which takes a week or two of poor connectivity until properly implemented...

...but if you insist 10 Gig Addict package for R 999, opt out of pay per use and purchase the modem upfront and utilise the month - month option and obtain it from a third party like Tradepage so you can bypass the accounting inefficiencies of the iBurst admin banking thieves.

This should be a last alternative for internet connectivity!

This is South Africa?

Only option at present is DSL unless you have deep pockets!

You might want to check out one of the Wisp's in your area or perhaps Neotel.

So it's down to one of two (particularly reprehensible, either way) demons: itBust with all that we know about them 'n the cell companies ..and we know all about THEM too!

But to answer specifically:

Please to define 'portable': can move from one part of the house to another, to friends' houses, what?

Will mainly be surfing and downloading using torrents.
I've got access to a 10gig package at the office 'n it runs for 2 heavy-duty users, a wife that Skypes overseas from time to time and does arb email for the staff. I just pulled a ~2.5gig torrent last week or so and that's far from the only torrenting/downloading I do - just before that I pulled the latest 'buntu .iso files. But I use FDM to handle it.

Willing to spend like R1000 or so p/m, maybe a lil more.
That gets you the 10gig/'Addict' package, the one that's apparently supported on torrents (which may well be why mine work...)

Any recommendations? I'd like something thats pretty reliable, not too slow, but the main thing is that it can handle torrents, tried and tested ^_^
Between itBust and the cell companies, I'd opt for the latter: jokers though the company may be, the tech is at least specifically made for this purpose whereas (and I'm going out on a limb here, I'm ready to be shot down on this) HSDPA is, at best, a kludge on top of GSM doing something the original system was never designed to do - it's just that it's so damned pervasive.

Yes it is - but where, specifically (PM me a street address if you like)? I have a client in that area who, having fallen on hard times, is looking to unload her UTD and omni (no you crazy WUGgers, not a 2.4GHz one!) which would mean you could follow w.i.m's advice (with which I fully concur) that you don't get caught in the 24month account trap.

Don't be surprised it Neotel don't cover your area, and get lots more info from the current users about your usability questions. Also, for now Neotel is USB only - would that matter to you?
