Recommended payment method for selling a car privately

The person buying your vehicle doesn't need to be an account holder at the same bank as you. When I sold my wife's car the person purchasing the vehicle was with Standard Bank while I'm with FNB. We went into the Standard Bank branch and sat by one of the consultants. I gave her my account details and she did an immediate transfer from the buyers account to my account.

The consultant also gave me all the supporting documents verifying that the transfer was successful. I gave him the cars papers and the sales invoice I'd drawn up and we both walked away happy.

That could work too. I've always either been with the same bank, or had them pay my parents for example - different bank. If in doubt, hold back the registration papers, that way if the money doesn't clear, you are still the legal owner - for what it's worth.
