I want to upgrade the sound in my Hilux - and have no clue where to start. Apparently the stock speakers are quite good. I currently have a Pioneer 7900BT headunit.

So basically need an amp and sub - anyone wanna recommend what to go with? I don't want to break the bank, or get anything fancy - just want some decent sound for long trips.

I recommend starting with an amp and a sub

LOL - thanks for that insightful comment.
Lol if you dont want to break the bank go with a 10" sub in a small box, you dont want it to take up 2 much space do ya. 500W amp should do.. Stay with familier brands like sony, pioneer, calibra & the like. Connect sub to amp in bridge mode and optionally get some tweeters(again pioneer or like) not to heavy in W so you can connect it straight to your headunit.

I'm assuming you're going to keep your factory speakers connected to the headunit. A setup like this wont make huge sound but i assume ur going for clear and not to bassy rather than trying to make a noise?

EDIT: O once you listen to it and the amp seems to strong for the sub rather dont bridge and put it on a single channel and put the tweeters on the other, but i dont think that will be the case unless the amp has high rms and the sub is a cheapy

I have 1x 2400 watt amp and 2x 12" Sony Subs if you want them.

R 2000. The box will be of no use but you can take that also :p
