Hi

I know that the HD PVR only outputs HD via the HDMi port and all other ports output at SD.

So, I was persuing the web and came up with an idea. Appolgies if this option has been discussed before.

SO here goes:

HD PVR Hdmi out
Into an HDMi/Component converter
Into the Hauppauge HD PVR component inputs
Into your PC via Hauppauge USB

I know guys use this method to capture their gameplay from the PS3 or Xbox, but was wondering if it would work with the DSTV HD PVR?
I am sure that encrption would be a problem, but maybe it's worth a try.

It would depend on the converter, if the converter does not send a HDCP message back to the PVR then the HDMI output will stop working

Is the Xbox elite and PS3 HDCP components? Where I am going is that if guys are getting it to work with the consoles (ie the convertor does what you say) then besides the dreaded encryption why wouldn't it work with the HD PVR (dstv)

DSTV has said this:
If you are watching HD content and the decoder realises you are sending it to your pc, it automatically converts it to SD. This is to prevent illegal recording of HD content.
DSTV is also attempting to completely stop this. Future decoders will be able to completely limit external viewing of the content.

I know that the latest update enabled macrovision on the outputs. You are able to capture (SD) to a dvd recorder, but can't write that to disc (unless its a RAM disc) This I have successfully done - but it is in SD and I am not sure if it will work with other DVD recorders - mine is a Panasonic.

What is the diffenrence between doing what I am suggesting and taping to a VHS from normal TV?

A standard HDMI to component converter will not as it won't support hdcp because component is analogue. But if the HDMI to component converter these people are using is actually a HD Fury or simlilar then it will work as this is also known as a hdcp stripper.

The HDMI to VGA hd fury from hd cabling goes for R1200. so not cheap. It looks like HD cabling doesn't carry the component version though so you may have to ask them to order it or look elsewhere.
