Can this be done or is there some sort of copy protection. My pvr is getting full and there's some stuff I want to hang onto.

The PVR is encrypted so it's not possible no, unless you can decrypt it.

Ok thanks, I take it that it must be able to recognize the difference between a tv set and a recording device then.

The HDCP encryption was completely cracked in Sept 2010 with the reverse engineering of the master keys.
