I got myself one of those USB video capture sticks( with AVi inputs)

I plugged in the PVR avi' into it, but do not get any signal on my pc.

Is there any reason for it?

I heard that there is some protection on HDMI, but not on composit inputs.

That sounds quite interesting.... what product are you using ?

From what I have seen there is protection on everything, composite and HDMI.
The protection is software related to there might be something you can do on your PC to remove the protection

probably because the USB port on the DSTV decoders is disabled dont think changing anything on your pc will help

From the FAQs....

""""""""""""In terms of copy protection, it is a contractual requirement that MultiChoice implement copy control on all decoders moving forward. This requirement comes from the content providers. The copy protection implementation is in line with international standards and for linear content, allows for “copy once”, ie. you can copy the content to an external device which is compliant with these standards, but you are prevented from using the copy on the external device to make additional copies (termed 2nd generation copies). For VOD (video on demand) content, the copy protection is set to “copy never”, ie. no copying of the content is allowed.

If your DVD player is no longer allowing for recording of content, we suggest that you check the manual supplied with the equipment, including how copy protection has been implemented on that device as well as any details on the type of DVDs to use.

It is important to note that the impact of copy protection on external recording devices is not unique to our market and has been reported in other territories where copy protection has been implemented. """""""""""""

Red Pro or similar may help depending on your device.

I currently have my set-top DVD recorder hooked up to the component outputs of the HD PVR on tuner 1 - records perfectly but in SD only on all channels and you cannot change the channel when recording... although I cannot record in HD, I can record the HD channels which produces a much better looking copy imo :)

There are inline devices for HDMI copy stripping, but you'd need to mortgage something to afford them ;)
