Recover data from hard drive that has been opened

I have a friend that need to recover data from a external hard drive. He has opened the hard drive (magnetic disk not SSD) when it stopped working to see if he can see what is wrong inside I know .

Any recommendation of someone/ IT shop that will be able to recover the data from the hard drive in the Stellenbosch / Cape Town aera would be appreciated

Haven't used them myself, but they've been around a while, and I see people recommending them.

Used them long ago got all my data back. They took out the drives plate and recovered the data since the PCB failed and could not get a replacement.

Heard good things about Southbit also.

@x7razor you would only remove the platters in very rare circumstances which would be if the actual motor is seized which hardly ever happens anymore. You might also remove them to check platters for damage, but again quite rare. If the PCB was faulty there would be no reason to remove the platters at all, so that sounds odd.

@Willie Trombone yup Ace Lab's PC3000 is the gold standard for data recovery, it allows us to work on HDD, SSD, NVMe, SAS, pretty much everything. It updates quite regularly which means we are able to work with more and more drives (especially SSDs) with every iteration as new drive FWs are unlocked. You couldn't run a successful recovery business without it really. But you have to pay to play
