Recover files from memory card

A friend deleted all the pics on her SanDisk memory card by accident (she has a Canon D400 camera). What is the best way to try and recover the pics from the memory card?
I found a "SanDisk Memory Card Recovery Software 3.0.1.5" application online but it's $69.

Are there any free software that will be able to recover the deleted files from the SanDisk Compact Flash memory card?
What is the best way to go about this?

Thanks. The problem is that when I connect the camera to the laptop, XP detects the camera as an imaging device but it doesn't assing a drive letter to it. So when I run recovery software, I can't scan the camera (and therefore the memory card) because the software will only scan the drives that it can see.

My laptop has a card reader built it, but unfortunately it doesn't read SanDisk CompactFlash cards.
