my phone has been stolen & I am unable to blacklist it as i do not have the imei number. The box & documentation are in Durban but I am in cape town. MTN is "unable" to help, despite being able to verify my ID etc.

The phone has been connected to my MacBook Pro, running both Mac & Windows (Nokia pc suite / Ovi Suite etc)
A recent backup was done using Ovi suite.

Is there any way to extract or recover the imei at all

I think pc suite saves user files under the imei no. as the folder.

Maybe your service provider will have it on their systems, they can block the sim and blacklist the phone that the sim was last inserted into.

just keep calling MTN, you might get lucky and find a consultant who can help you,MTN definately has your imei number,

Perhaps this will help your case?
I have found IMEI of my stolen n97 in windows registry LastSyncedImei entry.
finally i've found my IMEI number in a .nbu file. You have to download the free program called NbuExplorer 1.16. Open the nbu file, then look at the file parsing log. There you can find your IMEI number.
the full name of the program is NbuExplorer 1.16.3762.42356
