Hey All,

So i have been wondering,

Can you use any recovery DVD for your Macbook? For instance - lets say I have a Macbook Pro - can I use a Mac Mini DVD to restore??

Of course both DVD's are the same OS.

I remember reading somewhere that this is not possible..

I am just curious, as I am backing up my restore DVD's to the cloud now :D

No, they only work with the make and model that they come with unfortunately. You can restore both with a retail version of Snow Leopard or Leopard. That works on any Mac.

Bit hard to access if you really need them isnt it?

I learnt this from an experience lately. On the MacBook Pro you have to be careful about the vintage of the model. Post May 2010 (Core i chipsets) needs to have the specific restore O/S disk that came with the laptop. The retail version of SL 10.6.3 does not contain the drivers for the i5 and i7 processors.

Yeah that is an exception. Macs newer than the retail version won't work with it. Well I'm sure there'll be a 10.6.5 retail version soon or something for those. 10.6.3 retail works with almost all Macs, and I'm sure I could could slipstream you one if it really came down to that.

Thanks for the offer, but I organised a copy of the Install Disk from Core Technical, Boksburg. Man it's good to find the right contacts, then anything is possible!
So now I will put up my Retail version of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 in the Classifieds section.

You have another option. Macs *can* boot off USB if it is an OSX installation media. As far as I remember, all you have to od is format a USB stick HFS+ and copy the contents of your install DVD to the USB stick. This works for the retail DVD - not sure if it would work for the hardware specific install DVDs.

I was going to suggest that. It works brilliantly. It's very fast too, boots in seconds and installs quickly.

It does. But you must partition your USB using GPT (GUID in Disk Util) and it must be at least 8GB. If you are on Leopard, you could also use Dasboot if you can find it to create the USB for you, and add other tools to it.
