Recurring dreams

Very insightful - anchoring. My parents are visiting, and they are heavily associated with that time of my life...Mmmmm.

Maybe you are subconsciously worried that you have not done enough to deserve their approval or make them proud? Perhaps you fear they expect grandchildren or a wife that you have yet to acquire?

It's currently exam time all over the country. Give it about a week and you'll be fine.

Interesting point. He might be more susceptible to the collective anxiety of the hive mind due to his past stress during exam time.

According to most psychologists who specialise in dreams, the Unconscious is a symbolic processor. It's not the literal meaning of the content but the symbolic or representational meaning that needs to be uncovered. That meaning lurks in the Unconscious, so it's not directly accessible - if it were it wouldn't be unconscious. It is common cause amongst psychologists (my wife is a ClinPsych) that what pops into the conscious is a disguised and symbolic representation of what's really going on in the Unconscious.

For that reason it's very unlikely that the recurring maths exam dream has anything to do with a maths exam. Rather, as is normal, you have some or other unresolved issue/s, and your brain is testing and trying pathways and mechanisms to resolve & integrate those conflicts by modelling along paths it had previously used (such as your ancient maths exam). What the symbolic representation of the maths exam actually means can be very individual, and that can take a while under expert guidance to uncover.

Very insightful. If only I had enough money to afford to see a Therapist once a week to explore my demons...

You can control your dreams..

I used to have one after my divorce where my kids would be on the other side of a busy multilane street & they see me & begin running towards me right into traffic. Over and over again, with me waking up in a panic, until one day I had enough and told myself I will simply no longer dream this thing that upsets me so, so in the next few dreams they see me but I sign to them to wait there for me and it starts to work. Then I started dreaming I saw them walking on the edge of a tall building but can't get to them in time & I realized that this is just a continuation of the same issue so whenever I started dreaming about something bad happening to them I blocked that storyline in my dream and forced myself to dream something else about them that's pleasant. Even nowadays when I dream anything I don't want to it's like I click my tongue in disgust and put another real on/switch to another channel. I also used to wake up from bad dreams in disgust, then went back and changed the outcome of the dream to something more pleasant after I fall asleep again.

Nowadays I know it's called lucid dreaming, but I experimented with a lot of other things (like meditation) too at the time to still my mind.
Obviously the dreams also subsided as the anxiety about them became less, and nowadays I seldom have anxiety dreams anymore.
I just know now that you can control what you dream.

You don't need a therapist when you have the internet
Self-diagnosis FTW!

Eloquently explained. Can't wait for the collective festive season exuberance.

I need your tips on how to deal with or eliminate recurring dreams.

For me, it's always the same dream. I'm at University and I haven't attended any lectures the whole year and the big exam is coming up in a few days (usually Maths 2 or something very difficult and complicated that I couldn't possibly learn in a few days). I have had this dream now 3 nights in a row this week. It is tiring and stressful and takes a big emotional toll on me. When I wake up eventually, I feel so irritated because I realise I have had a job now for nearly 15 years and haven't written an exam for as long!

Has anyone else had this dream and what did you do to stop it?

Oi! That's what I said!

Exam
Exam
To dream that you are taking an exam signifies insecurities, fear of not meeting others' expectations, and fear of failure.

Update: I had pleasant sleep and no more exam nightmares this past weekend. This after I managed to complete a huge list of household chores, tasks and maintenance that we plaguing me for months.

Thank you all for the insights.

Just think of your first sexual encounter with a mistress, hooker or maybe your wife's sister before you get into dreamland, and you might get a wet dream encounter, which is more enjoyable than dreaming of your botched
Maths test. :D
