Mweb seems to be learning from Telkom on how to treat their customers, I am a Mweb ADSL subscriber, not by choice - they seem to have bought out most of their competition, started of with Global years ago, this change hands a few times and now is owned by Mweb.
Be this as it may, my gripe with them is that they offer 10mb free web space for your personal use, I have started a small business and are using the space for promoting this. I have also registered my business web address with them. Here comes the red tape, I would like them to forward traffic from my registered name to my free space, make sense to me as it is with the same firm - although I am prepared to pay for this service I am hitting a brick wall. Their answer is very blunt, sorry but no can do; I would have to buy a business hosting package from them at a once off price of R211.00 and a monthly fee of R234.00.

What for, I have free space, I have a registered domain name with them, and all I want is forwarding which I am prepared to pay for.

Then again, maybe my expectations of service in this country are skewed.

Er dude, that's the reason they don't let you have domain forwarding with free space - they want you to buy their service. With the TelkomSA ones, the R269 ADSL offering comes with 20MB free space, and if I remember right it then says how you can buy a domain FROM TelkomSA and then use that and have free forwarding. This all because there is a lack of competition :(:(

Suggest you move your domain and hosting requirement to another provider, who will usually undertake to do the dirty work for you. Methinx Dataspace is a good alternative. If you're not under contract for your ADSL, you could move that too.

Vee, I've come across this bullsh1t with Mweb before - tell them to take a running jump and stick it where the sun don't shine.

Bottom line, you can get Hetzner or Afrihost (www.hetzner.co.za / www.afrihost.co.za) to setup EVERYTHING for you, including moving the domain, for under R200 + you can get a hosting plan for under R50 a month including email.

That's for hosting in South Africa.
If you want to host on overseas servers, heck, you can go as low as R10 a month !

Don't bother with further answers from the forum on this, because it's so easy - just get on the phone on Monday and give one of them a call.

Yes, there are PLENTY of other hosting companys here, but I highly recommend the two above, as their service is outstanding.

Unfortunately this is how Mweb operates. They are as greedy and unhelpful as Telkom. Consider moving your domain to a company like http://www.mydomain.com . They will forward your domain to your free mweb hosting for no charge. Then you won't have to fork out the per month hosting charge. (The great thing is that your true URL is masked and your visitors will only get to see your actual domain).

You can do it yourself with www.no-ip.info

I can understand why MWeb is refusing. It doesn't make business sense to them. It should, but it doesn't.

Do it yourself is the best advice I can give.

Antowan

Thanks for the advise, I will investigate and make the change - should have done more research at the start. Not to late to fix.

Many thanks all
