Seems GearBest will be my last option, I'm just looking for local alternatives before I take the risky import route.

I won't say it is risky at all. Have ordered the Note 4X. And another time also a 3D Printer with no issues. Used DHL for the phone. The only risk is the warranty. If you pay via PayPal you are also covered if you didn't get your product. But Gearbest will also sort it out. So for me there is no risk in the order. I would say just the warranty if something goes wrong. Don't think you will find the Note 4X with warranty in SA.
