My tenant says the pool is horrible and I was possibly looking at redoing it one day any way. On average - how much is this to do?

I think the pool is around 50,000l

Ok I've got some 2c to throw in here.
We also had about a 50kl pool that was installed years ago like with yours the gunnite became like sandpaper and generally rendered the pool completely unusable.

So we set about looking at options (this was about 5 years ago so please pardon the fuzziness on pricing) of which you have 4 main ones:
1. Resurface with marbelite / gunnite
We found it quite difficult to find anyone to do it and the costs were ridiculous as the tile border and coping needed replacement ~R70k for this option.

2. Reline with fibreglass this was the more "attractive" option and came in at about R50k however the guarantee was only about 6months through various companies all citing that it would be likely to lift in the corners of the pool

3. Change the size of the pool and drop a smaller fibreglass shell in, this would be optimal and carry a full guarantee (10-20 odd years iirc) but was similarly priced to the relining option.

4. This is the one we went for, we had Ross Demolition remove the whole ****ing mess for R40k thats not doing the poor mans version of breaking open the bottom and filling with the rubble of the walls, complete removal of the concrete, re-bar et al.

The last option made the most sense for us as being in the throes of water restrictions, spending about R2k a month on chemicals (something to do with the gunnite being very porous) and the threat of ever increasing energy costs. We had several estate agents quote opinions on resale value inc and ex the pool and the general consensus was the only time it would make a difference to the buyer is if they are really seeking a pool.

So Dolby, if your tenant complains about the walls being sif.. do you also redo them?

Well, if she has a point.

Thanks BTW 8Ball

Not sure about your area, but we got great service from Cheetah Pools in Centurion. Was +/- R40k for similar sized pool - Took about a week. They knocked off the old marbelite, smoothed and patched redid it. Looks amazing now (Included tiling)

Was just going to say my mother redid her pool with marbellite - R20k. Those prices you have been quoted seem a bit extortionist.

We thought so too, but this was the prevailing rate quoted from about 8-10 different providers. Hence our decision to get rid of the thing :P

I was quoted 25-30k to remarbelite a 50k litre pool.
Quote for Epoxy came to 13k.
Then you need to factor in the cost of refilling the pool as well if you're using municipal water.

Isn't fibreglass generally the better option because it retains heat, while the concrete options are all very cold?

Just thought I'd update.

R18,500.00 + acid wash of around R1,500.00. Not bad at all for the price
