Reduced backwards compatibility for European PS3

You have a bit of selective reading there. In Japan the PSP, PS2 and PS3 outsold the Xbox 360.

However, my point is not who sells the most. If Pepsi sells less cooldrinks than Coca Cola, does that make them a failure?

Japan is a pretty much Sony/Nintendo territory. The uptake on the XBox360 was slow in Japan even at it's launch. Its the rest of the world that Sony have to worry about.

But they're not having problems with sales in America either...

@Retro: Really?

They're being outsold by the Wii and the 360, they have stock gathering dust on the shelves, they have a game attach rate of less than 1, (more consoles sold then games)

Yes, they are having problems.

How is getting sales like this shooting yourself in the foot???

I can tell you how...when each console you sell are sold at a big loss in hopes to make it up in software sales and/or blue-ray movie sales.

Compare this to competitors like Nintendo who might be selling less but are making a profit on each....

Simple Calculation :

WII : $300 , $0 profit [breaking even]
PS3 : $600 , $100 loss [i'm being generous here]

Now:
100 WIIs sold : Nintendo breaks even
50000 PS3s sold : Sony makes $5000000 loss ....

So the question is, will Sony be able to sell enough GAMES to break even or make a profit so they can actually IMPROVE their offerings? It's very easy for Sony to get into a state where they simply can't afford to build on top of the platform [i.e. no price cuts, no new accessories, no progressive improvement] .....it can become a total cash-black-hole for them..where the one making a profit can afford to "splash" out on all the extras and services and even cutting development royalties [encouraging more titles moving towards the platform etc etc]....

Like with the motion sensitivity on the controller that they probably included in the controller at the last minute, thus no rumble.

The missing "rumble" is because Sony lost a 82 million USD patent infringement suit from Immersion who owns the concept on force feedback in gaming controllers.

Microsoft already settled with them for the XBox controller and licensed their stuff for the 360.

Sony did not want to pay.

Nintendo actually makes a profit on each Wii sold ... the console costs them $158 to manufacture and they resell it for $250.

Estimates indicate that Microsoft now makes a profit of $37 on each Xbox360 but that Sony is currently loosing about $200 on each PS3 sold.

Also they saved about $40 when they removed the PS2 chip (EE+GS) and memory (4MB RDRAM) from the European PS3.

We all know PS3's are being sold at a loss, so are the 360's, which nobody says anything about. Very clever only comparing it to the Wii?

Do you really think Sony didn't budget for those losses?

Doesn't matter if the PS3 is being outsold by another console, it's still selling hundreds of thousands of consoles.

It's funny how the PS3 is a failure cause the 360 are selling more units, but the 360 is still a success even though the Wii is outselling it...

umm it was mentioned in the same posting???

The 360 now makes a $75 profit on each premium model which just means they are primed for a price cut..

Also don't forget that the attachment rate of games for the PS3 is <1 whilst with the 360 it is greater than 3...

That is big money for M$ and a huge loss for the PS3... They need games quickly.

Sony is taking a loss of $250 + per console not just $100. that PS3 designer said that ppl should just work harder to get a PS3 to justify the cost.

IMO backward compatibility should not even have been built into the PS3. The marketing guys just needed some ammo and it's really screwing them over.
