So my braai were built with cement bricks and not fire/clay bricks. It was lined with cement which was severly cracked and missing in large part of the braai. The chimney is also lined with cracked and there are signs off attempted repairs.

1. I have started chipping away the old cement lining and removed the bricks which was placed as a liner on the bottom of the braai, most were broken.

2. I have ordered clay bricks, but before doing anything, is there anything I should do to prepare the walls, prior to lining the braai with new claybricks (to be cemented in place)

I'd try to get some of that soot off. Probably won't stick well otherwise

Maybe powerwash...just let it dry after

My advice would be to use fire bricks. I would also leave I for a good couple of weeks before using and allow cement to cure properly.

in general I stay away from building a braai. I try to avoid come backs so won’t do anything that I’m not 100% happy to guarantee.

Thanks for the feedback:

1. Purchase proper firebricks and wire mesh.
2. Powerwash the soot off.
3. After relining, wait at least two weeks before first use.

Also having issue with fireplace now where fire bricks are falling off, any special cement I should use to replace the bricks inside the fireplace

Put vermiculite in the mortar mixture.

Edit: and some aluminum oxide. Or just purchase some refractory cement, give these guys a call:
