This is an interesting and quite informative story.
The most interesting part is :

"Like all the other expats I was negative about South Africa and thrived on all the bad publicity because that was what defined and justified my decision to take my children away from their family, their friends and their country. I wanted to see South Africa fail in all aspects so that I can rub those that has crucified me for leaving noses in it."

This statement confirms what I thought about expats. In fact, South Africa has may be the worst publicity from its own citizens abroad. May be god old time, racism or jealousy.

May be other countries like Belgium, France, and Italy are bashed by expats.

Surprisingly enough, in countries like Brazil, Russia or even China (where situation is may be worse), citizens abroad make good publicity for their country of birth. And I personaly know that Russia (especially in Moscow and Rostov) is a violent and crime infested country.

Strange...

Don't say anything positive about SA on these forums else you will lose all credibility.

I don't know if citizens of China, Russia and Brazil make 'good publicity' but I've spoken to Chinese people working here and they are scared of criticising China, these are not Taiwanese or naturalised/or second generation SAns but Chinese fresh from China. Russians? They do criticise Russia - I know a few Russians in SA and they do criticise Russia when I speak to them - the mafia there, the corruption, the lack of opportunities, bribery in government etc.
Brazil - I don't know any Brazilians.

I will say that NEGATIVE PUBLICITY which is HONEST or even a little exaggerated is a good thing. CRITICISM is an aspect of democracy, people voice their opinions and if those opinions EMBARRASS the authorities here and they do something to alleviate these 'false perceptions' - and by that I don't mean hire shill writers for blogs and forums or launch super expensive tax payer funded ad campaigns on CNN on NY Times, I mean they genuinely take steps to improve the cause of these concerns - that will be a great positive.

Patriotism - true patriotism - is about improving your country, it's not about lying. You're only fooling yourself if you blindly follow the mentality of AIDS-denialist Thabo Mbeki et al. You have to admit you have faults, and try to remedy them - passing the buck and blaming a small minority of bitter expats is not going to solve the problems this country has - crime, poor work ethic, lack of accountability, corruption and HIV/AIDS/TB.

Not really strange...its actually quite understandable...if you lived your life in a close protected environment.

Another thing to watch out.
If someone reported some positive news,a tourist speaks out,or even an expat change his view about the country, the source gets discredited or the tourist gets slammed for daring to speak positive..its astonishing.

How that for living with your head in the...umm sand.

No dude, the ANC is the greatest possible form of bad publicly, added to that all the citizens inside the country that are causing all the crime! In short, the bad news comes from within! ;) if things were good there would be no concern from people abroad. Besides, australians, kiwis the whole lot all have the same concerns for SA. Its just because some of us are ex-sa and have moved on, we branded bad expats!!!

Maybe take the time out to hear the concerns of expats. Most of the time its taken out of context. Concerns seem to be branded as country bashing!!!

Worse? Dude there are not over 50 murders, 150 rapes per day in those countries. See my concern? Or am I now bashing my country?
