regarding local and int bw allocatiions by ISPs

This might be a dumb question but do any of the ISPs who currently offer mixed local and international bandwidth allocations actualy do their accounting on the traffics destination/location. In other words, do they have 2 metering systems for the customer, one counting int bw and one counting local bw or do they all do what telkom do with their 'blended' offering.

Most "blend". I've only seen Cybersmart offering a split service. It is not done as traffic splitting at router level, but rather involves being logged in and out of international and local bandwdith on demand, so there is a "switch-over" delay. The other downside with Cybersmart's local bandwdith is that you have no access to news servers.

A traffic splitting solution at user level is still your best bet.

Dont you think there is a huge opportunity for and ISP here to get loads of customers with this kind of offering even if it is done at the user router level or at the isp side? Local gamers Im sure amongst others would give left gonads for this offering.
ISPs, wake up and smell the customers....

Telkom has everyone by the balls. I'm sure most ISP would like to offer a split national/international but what Telkom wants to make lots of $$$ so they allow a service like that

The other downside with Cybersmart's local bandwdith is that you have no access to news servers.

Cybersmart does have a news proxy - squid02.cybersmart.co.za and I was able to download with Grabit, Alt.Binz and even Outlook Express.

That said, I still decided to cancel with them and take 2 accs, 1 x 5 Gig INT and 1 x 30Gig Local and to use seperate PPPOE connections. I "go live" on 1 Feb.
