Hi all.

I would like to register a url name , and then start to build my own website. It will be a .co.za . What can you guys recomend and what must I avoid ? I have been to godaddy.com and a few other places , I would just like to get all the info to make sure that this is a success and that I avoid hidden pitfalls.

I have googled it a bit, but would like to hear first hand from you guys about any hidden problems and stuff. I will be a community based site with a forum and most likely advertising.

Thanks.

Hi Kabal,

The domain registration process is quite straightforward these days as most webhosts will setup the DNS records for you when you sign up your required domain name. As for the management and software this is also easy as you most often can install your desired CMS like Wordpress from the web hosting control panel with much effort.

Do you know what your requirements are for site you would like to get online?

even if is a community website, you need a little money to run your setup.

To register a dot COZA, my recommended choice is domaincheap.co.za

You can host your website also with them. Quite affordable.

Texo.co.za is also a good option for hosting (you can also register the dot COZA with texo, but is a little more expensive).

There is also international free hostings (without ads) that can also be an option, less reliable anyway...

We used to have a wonderful FREE system powered by google apps to handle your email -regardless of your hosting provider-. Not anymore...
there is an option to use Windows Live email with your own domain on http://www.domains.live.com/ (I haven't tried yet).

Thanks so far guys. I am an absolute n00b at this right now , so any advice would be great. I would prefer to get hosting where I can get my own sponsors and have my own advertising, would hate to be spammed to death with crappy ads that are not relivant or needed.

There are lots of templates out there. I would like something like the myadsl set up , although it will be NOTHING like this, far from it , but it would be great to have a forum, and a classified section to it. The forums can have various sub sections as well.

I am not too sure what you mean. Traffic wise? Storage wise? I really am not sure what requirments you refer to. I just want to register the name first, once I have that done, then I can move onto the next step of hosting. It would be great to do it all at once and at the same place, but I am not fussy about it, as long as I own the name or URL. Local or international hosting? Last i read it was better to host internationally than locally, is that still the same?

I am sure it will be difficult to understand all of this stuff at once, and starting from zero knowledge but you fail at everything you dont try. Thanks so far guys.

If you don't know anything at all about web design you might do better registering and buying your domain through Wordpress and using one of their templates to design your website with.

It will be infinitely more professional than a "learning in progress" DIY type website.

A .co.za site for one year is R50.00 .

Elitehost ... R35.00 per month

Am I missing something between the two of these ?

Wordpress would not give me a .co.za only .com , also it seems to be more focused on blogging.

What things are a must for every website? Things that I must have for safety and transactions ect ect. Thanks

Yes, the one uses the old co.za method, Elitehost is a registrar with co.za using the new EPP system, the EPP system is cheaper to use than the old "email to register or update something" method uniform used
