Anyone had positive experiences with using registry cleaners with Windows 7? If so what program, version etc. please.

I have some problems with my 3G card and Mobile Connect, and suspect it has to do with orphaned registry entries and reference to drivers. I have used about 4 different 3G modem models & software in the last few months, and not my newest 3G card (E1690) does not want to install of its drivers properly. I have tested the 3G card on another Windows 7 machine, and it works perfectly.

So, please help me out with a reference to a compatible and reliable registry cleaner for Windows 7.

Cheers Rudi

Use Windows 7 Manager.
Works great. Also has a lot of other goodies included.

I didn't use the Registry Cleaner itself. I used the uninstaller than comes with the manager.
Uninstalls the program then you can choose to do a registry scan for the specific software. It then gives you the option to delete any of the entries left behind.

@Op: I had the same problem a while back--try uninstalling the previous software left over by the other dongles; then try the new dongle you wish to use--it should install the drivers then.

About registry cleaners: I have been using CCleaner for a while now without any issues in W7 RC. Does the job quite well I must admit.

Thanks, but I have literally tried everything that comes to mind to get these 3G cards working again.

Neither old (E220) or new (E1670) allows correct driver installation, and only on this particular machine!!! It drives me crazy, as both dongles work in other W7 rigs.

Btw I have been running W7 RC1 since the same day it got released, on about 7 different rigs/laptops, all with great success.

I installed the Windows 7 Manager app, it is quite versatile, allows a number of Windows 7 aspects to be customized and optimised, in addition to the reg cleaner. Several thousand orphaned entries were detected, I removed them all, the machine is still running fine otherwise, except for the 3G dongles of course, which btw is still not working even after a reg clean.

So I am left with a full reinstall, because of a f#$% dongle! Now that p@#$% me off.

Sorry for the ranting but a reinstall is a big job, and seems like a lot of work for a "small problem.

The reinstall happens tonight, unless one of you forumites come up with a solution between now and tonight at 19h00 :)

Open a dos prompt.
Type: pnputil.exe -e
Find any drivers associated with your card, then type:
pnputil -d "the published name"
or to force delete it:
pnputil -f -d "the published name"

Random717, thanks for that tip, While it unfortunately did not solve the problem, I have certainly learnt something new today.

I have deleted all the Huawei drivers (I left the Option ones there, right?) and not it does not even get to the stage where it wants to install modem drivers. It just installed the "USB Storage Device" drivers, and I can now see the device in My Computer. Nothing more.

Could it have something to do with autorun? When I insert a normal USB memory stick it gets picked up, drivers are installed and the device can be seen in My Computer, but the "autorun" function seems disabled? Could this be the source of my problem?

Btw in the Autoplay settings there is not a single device listed (no memory stick or modem device - they are both plugged in) under the "devices" section...is this right?

I don't have anything listed here either.

Did you try scanning for changes in Device Manager?

Rudi, I guess you use all those laptops on the move, otherwise it would have made much more sense to get a Vodafone (Huawei) B970 wireless router.

Guys, thanks for all the advice and suggestions. It is really appreciated!

In the end I reformatted. The first thing I installed was the new Huawei E1690 3G modem, it picked up all the drivers, did the installation and it works flawlessly. It even now picks the device up and loads the Mobile Partner app upon insertion into any USB port, and the modem connects to Vodacom without a hitch.

I guess something in the registry became corrupted. As I'm sure you will all agree, Windows OS's do tend to sometimes develop corrupted registries at times, and I guess this was just one of them. I do not blame the OS, but rather think I was the cause with switching to so many different Huawei devices, each with its own s/w and device drivers.

Just glad it works again, plus there is nothing like a fresh install to remind you of how well Windows works when everything is fresh!

Have a great weekend!

You are right, unfortunately I am always on the move hence the need for a mobile 3G card.

I already have an Option wireless 3G router, which I bought for R2000 about 18 months ago and have hardly used it, it is just standing there in my bookshelf looking pretty. It is a brilliant piece of hardware, I bought it at the time when MTN was really aggresively punting their 3G data services, tested it for about a month as a potential replacement for iBurst. I even modified it to have a little pigtail for connecting to an external antenna. In the end, the MTN service was just too unstable and slow at the time to serve as a mainstream internet access service for home use (gaming and heavy surfing). The router and antenna (which is still on the pole outside) is just here, if someone might have need for it...

I really like this new Huawei E1690 modem, it has a nifty little microSD slot which allow it to serve as a memory stick (the modem is the same size as a memory stick) and is really compact. It even has a plug for an external antenna! My IT department really looks well after me!
