I've lately been aware of a very regular disk activity, evidenced by the disk light flashing regular as clockwork about once per second, particularly noticeable when no other activity is taking place. (My desktop sits under the desk, so I do not normally see what's going on, only lately became aware of this.) I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate edition, b.t.w.
I've tried stopping all unnecessary operations such as stopping all desktop gadets, examined running services and stopping whatever ones I can, disconnect from the 'net, etc. Have also tried disabling anti-virus (MS security essentials). I've been watching the built-in resource monitor (resmon.exe) to try and pick up any regular disk activity there, but that did not help much - obviously the very act of running the monitor itself causes regular actions to take place. It happens in safe mode as well.
This is probably not serious, but it's like a tap dripping, the rate is small but if it happens continuously then the water loss mounts up over time; what's the effect on disk wear over a long period?
Has anyone any ideas or suggestions on the question, please?
