i recieved a computer with windows vista preinstalled. the pc had an auethentic liscense key. the computer used to work fine,but.after.alot of software installation it seemz faulty.

the pc wont start if i.press the power button. i press it , all the fans come on, i can hear the hard drives boot etc.. but.no display, not even the bios screen. i have to let this happen, then go to the back of the computer and turn the power supply.button on/off. once that is done, i get display and everythings fine.

this is becoming tedious, and hibernate or other power options dont function. now i want to sort thiz out. my options :
i dnt have the original vista disk, so i cant do A normal format. i have no prior knowledge on boot sector viruses, which i suspect. with all the updates and effort i put in trying to protect this pc, i really dnt want to resort to reformatting. i read a article about restoring the mbr, but that requires.the windows.disk. will system restore do anything for me? also i think this is a oem version,

another thing this started when i installed rise of nations. my anti virus never not once picked up any viruses, but did so when it found the ron crack:( i refused it from doing anything, but trend.micro is insistent so i.just let it do.its thing eventually.

ok so i.dnt know whats up.with pc, i gave what i thinks wrong, everything ive done is in vain to sort thiz boot.problem out.

1. First get a proper spell checker.
2. Is the PC still under warranty? If so, take it back. Your PSU is not good, or there is some other hardware-related issues.
3. Stop downloading warez - you get trojans and viruses which will lead to problems with Windows.

you could reinstall/restore with someone else's disk using YOUR key.

drivers for the PC you'd have to DL from the manufacturer of your PC.

But first what PC or laptop is it?

Additional Info

Sorry for the spelling errors, I did the original post from a phone.
This pc was given to me, and it was the best I could get my hands on at the time, so I kept it in its original form.
The power supply does not seem to be the problem, because once the computer is on it can run for over 24 hours straight.

In terms of hardware, it has two SATA drives and DVD-ROM, both functional. Also the network card gives me no problems either.
With graphics, I presume it's onBoard. The operating system works perfect once on, but it's the initial boot that is the problem.

Here is another scenario : The computer is on with open documents and programs running, I leave it and then it power saves and like temporarly shuts down. When I hit a few keys on the keyboard, I hear the machine come back on but there is no display. I have to go to the back of the pc, and turn the power supply Unit on an off whilst the computer is on. I know It works, when one of the fans that is visible from the back of machine stops, and powers on again. When it does come on again, everything I had running will still be there.

I have attached an image, with some info about the computer.

Thanks for help.

A windows licence key without the windows os disc is not an authentic licence key.

Not true. You can purchase licenses from Microsoft online, these come with a image download link. You can also buy a replacement disc, as long as you have the license sticker/authentication codes that come with an email, also MAK's/VLSC keys come without any disc. If you are part of eopen/Open Value then a disc is couriered, again, the disc is not proof of authenticity.

Ah, no the license key is pretty authentic. That is one of the reasons I want to retain the Windows Copy, and not format my PC. Like I said, I was given this PC as is, and all the Microsoft Updates run weekly, so there's no issue with the key.

Update the BIOS. Upgrade to Windows 7. Any less and you're just going to keep having @#$%.

Thanks for the replies. I guess there is no point in toy-toying with workarounds. It is settled, sorting out the PC means bios/mbr/formatting - all issues I am going to avoid. The most probable cause I have worked out, is a software Programme known as
"unetbootin". I was experimenting with it for running an alternative to a dual boot ( wanted to have linux as well ). I think it did something to the mbr. It saved me from having install linux's grub or anything else like that, but caused more severe problems in the end.

Thanks again :)
