Is it possible (and legal) to relay internet from one house to the next by linking 2 routers via LAN Cable?
I know you can set up the router as DHCP relay, so in theory it should be possible, but is it allowed by Telkom?

I presume you are refering to adsl routers?

Practically, you don't want to use the router portion, the second router which is not connected to adsl line must have dhcp switched off, then using the lan ports (or using an ethernet switch) connect the routers using a network cable. All you computers will now share the same net and internet.

As to legality, it may well not be.

Thanks! That's what I thought.
I could however not find anything in Telkom's T&C's prohibiting it.
Maybe I just missed it?

Why would it be illegal? Say you live on a huge property and need to have Internet in 5 buildings spread all over the site, you would be doing what you are doing now.

Technically/legally you need to own both properties and not cross any public space (road) to accomplish this as I recall.

Using Wireless would be much simpler regardless.

I'm assuming that the properties are adjacent and the guy understands running cable over public land is not legal(then again if it's unobtrusive and not permanently affixed probably not going to be much issue, ie unseen and unheard)

Looks like he's more worried about Telkom not allowing him to share his Internet bandwidth, which I seriously doubt unless he's using it as an isp of sorts, ie selling the bandwidth on to hordes of people.

Yeah as long as you aren't reselling it as such I don't see a problem with Telkom themselves.

Besides...how would they know?
