Does anyone know when the Apple watch with the built in ECG functionality be released in South Africa. I need to get one urgently for my son.
Well, it would need to be certified to be used as a medical device in South Africa. Who knows if Apple have even submitted it for review.
To enable ECG you have a few options, but it is important to know that ECG can only be enabled on watches bought in places where ECG is enabled. This is the USA, HK, etc and you have 2 options
- Travel to a country where ECG is enabled, buy the Watch, pair to your phone and activate it.
It is important that your phone is connected to the cellular network in that country (even if it's roaming) as the tower identifier (MCC ID) is used to make sure what country you are in.
- Get someone to buy the watch from an ECG enabled region, and then enable it by restoring a modified backup where the ECG flag has been set. This restore can be done anywhere on the planet.
You cannot enable a SA watch with the restore, it has to be a watch bought from a ECG region.
I bought an Apple Watch Series 4 a few days ago from iStore and managed to get the ECG app working by using iMazing to edit a backup of my iPhone, so it’s not necessary to buy a Watch from USA.

Which version of iOS are you running on your iPhone for the edit ?
WatchOS 6.2.8 enables ECG in South Africa.
