Hi guys,

This is my first post here and I haven't read through every possible discussion but I'm desperate for some advice.

Long story short, we had 4 mbps ADSL up and running from Telkom (data through Afrihost), for several months. Then in January we had major storms and a Telkom area outage. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, Telkom assured us that the lines were all fixed. In the meatime I got a new modem (last one got zapped), and fortunately my ASUS router was spared. Plugged in the modem and got it working again with some config help from Afrihost.

But alas, the line speed was now down to 2 mbps. Afrihost point to Telkom, Telkom was clueless. 2 technicians came out and the last one told us that we cannot be on a 4 mbps line because we only have 2 mbps in the area. We told the moron that we had 4 mbps for several months until the area outage. nou wat nou?

Again, Telkom remained clueless. To make matters worse, since the outage and reconnection, we have to restart out modem like every 30 min cause it goes into 'LED flash mode' and no data seems to come through (if you know what I mean).

We have a D-Link modem/router, and that connects to an ASUS WiFi router.

1 - how can we fix the having to reset the modem every 30 min?
2 - why did we have 4 mpbs for months and now Telkom says we can only have 2?
3 - what are our options in the Lakefield, Benoni area to get reliable, affordable internet???

Any help, advice, would be great!

Same thing happened to me. Our ADSL stopped working in January. By April, after numerous reference numbers, escelations and attempts to fix it, it was still broken. So we cancelled the line and the ADSL. Then they came out and tried to fix it two more times. The second time they told us it was fixed and cleared the fault. It wasn't fixed. I had to resend the cancellation order. Eventually they cancelled it. Then somebody from Telkom called me to arrange my refund, except it turned out to be a scammer who then proceeded to take R10,000 out of my bank account.

Good luck with getting your line fixed.

You have any idea how far you are from the distribution point?
Could be interleaving causing some problems as well.
Does your exchange support ADSL2+?
Any congestion on your exchange?

Go to telkom facebook page and querry these things, those techies could be of better assistance than the phone support

I've reported it to TelkomZA on this forum. Got initial response that they would monitor for 24 hours and revert to me. Next told by Terrick that he'd handed over to line staff and got a call last Monday asking me for my number, gave it and transpires that they have a different number and would sort it and het back to me. Terrick no long replies despite 3 messages. This has all come about by me moving house 3 km away on the same exchange. The transfer of my line took a month and about 20 hours at Telkom shop.

What is the dialing code for your area/exchange?
What does your line stats tell you?
Have you tried to use Zertops line toll to establish what is going on?

Do you have a 011894 number? You probably connect to the BARDENE exchange. I am also having endless issues.

I get 10mb then it drops down to 2MB. Then its back up. Telkom don't seem to know what's going on.
