Someone that I know is having his 70th birthday soon. I help him with his computer quite a lot but he is in desperate need of a new one, and a laptop will be the best option for him.

His family want to buy him a laptop for his birthday and want me to find one that will be best suited to his needs. Basically he browses the web a bit, uses Outlook and Word a lot, copies some DVD's, and prints some things.

The laptop needs to be reliable, :), and also be a good price. Not a netbook as the screen is too small.

Your guys help will be awesome, as always.

Acer Aspire, otherwise I own a Compaq 615 series. Good performance for the price. Never had troubles with it. Price: R4500 to R5000

Toshiba are also quite good in the value for money aspect.. But watch out for one of their series, cant remember the name, but they had heating problems..

I don't know much about acer, but the thing I love about our dells... is that if anything goes wrong, they come fix onsite the next day (I don't like the idea of sending my machine away). I've had just about my whole laptop replaced in the last 4 years, all onsite within a business day. You should be able to pick up a pretty good dell for just over 5K that has the 3 year onsite warranty. I usually get them from PCLaptops.co.za, but i'm sure most dell resellers are the same price.

Don't ask me about a particular model, the last one we got in that price range was a Dell studio I think.

Out of those which would be the better option?

The 625. You'll have newer technology and you get much better stuff for such a small price difference.

I purchased my 615 about a month before the 625 came out.
