Relocating detachable ADSL antenna

Good day

I have ADSL broadband (802.11g ADSL2+ Firewall Router, channel 1, 2.412 GHz) from Telkom, using a modem given by them, a Billion 400G. The link to the modem appears below.

http://www.arxvaldex.com/pb/files/manuals/Billion400g.pdf

I have a desktop computer, so I never used the wireless component of the modem.

However, my 3 children have recently acquired laptops for their studies and are now using the wireless component.

Two of the children are having problems connecting to the internet from inside their rooms (a bathroom is in the way), but have no problem outside of their rooms. The third one is fine.

The cheapest and simplest option would be to relocate the detachable antenna.

Relocate the antenna

The antenna uses RP-SMA connectors the distance is about 12m. I intend to install the antenna in the ceiling so that all rooms are covered.

1. I think that they are RP because the antenna’s screwthread is on the inside and is the female connector and the modem’s screwthread is on the outside and contains the male pin. Is this correct?

2. Is this a good option because I have read that wireless connection is slower and inferior to a cable connection?

3. Will this negatively affect the performance to any computer?

4. What type of cable should I use? If coaxial cable, what is the impedance?

Thank you so much for your assistance.

Max

Unfortunately, you need very expensive cable (called a "pigtail") with appropriate connectors to extend the aerial. A far better bet, which I have used on numerous occasions, is to get a 14db flat panel aerial and either a 1 metre or a 3 metre pigtail

Both Poynting and Miro sell these - look under Antennas, 2.4GHz here:

http://www.miro.co.za//products.asp...(802.11 b/g/n/) Antennas&spid=253&spp=&sspid=

You will need the antenna itself, and a cable - sold separately

In the meantime, put the router itself as high as possible (close to the ceiling!)

Taking into account your time, effort, difficulty in sourcing components, etc.. I'd say the easiest means to solving the problem in this case is a simple wireless repeater. If they're just using the web for browsing the web/research and social stuff, it'll be more than fast and stable enough if put in the right position.

I recommend either the D-Link DAP 1360 or the more expensive but slightly more powerful DAP-2360.
Otherwise there are options from Cisco in the RE1000 (internal antennas so not quite as powerful) and Netgear (same, although they may have a model with external antennas aswell).

Thanks chrisc4290, your assistance is much appreciated. I thought it would be a simple matter of connecting a length of coax with the appropriate connectors, lol. Silly me.

Your problem is your Billion's 802.11g WiFi, simplest solution is to replace it with something that can do 802.11n. Assuming that all your laptops use 802.11n(pretty much guaranteed since they're new) you'll immediately increase your WiFi range.

Thanks Dean. I think that those would push up the costs a bit?

Well that depends on how much you value your time :)

The repeater itself would be the only thing you'd need to buy, and they go for about R500-R1000 depending on the brand and model. It just connects to power and you're good to go (after about 2 minutes of configuring it through the web interface).

Thanks all for the info. Looks like I'm going to do research on prices AND on whether it WILL solve my problem before deciding. The worst thing is to spend money and the problem persists. My options are:
1. A higher gain antenna, the 14dB flat panel with 1m pigtail
2. A wireless repeater (D-Link DAP 1360 or Dap 2360)
3. A new N router (TP-Link WDR 4900)
Thanks again

I'd go for a repeater personally.

Its preferable to go around a problematic wall than try blast though it. A well placed repeater will go round and give you more coverage.

I upgraded to a better router and my signal is great all round the house, but my house is small.
