Our server at work runs a point of sale system. Usually someone monitors the system from the server and do a few other tasks, e-mail etc.

I need to work on Excel, Word, and other documents on the server.

TeamViewer or Anydesk mirror what the remote user is doing, which is fine so long as there is no one else on the server doing something else.

So is there any way to achieve this without the mirroring?

Any desk "private" mode blanks the local screen - so locking the person monitoring the PoS out.

So alternative, is using a cloud drive, that dies not require the owner or one of the 2 managers to authorize/authenticate logging into the drive when either of us needs to work on these documents.

Any other possibilities?

Thanks

Avoid Anydesk and Teamviewer, you're setting it up to be attacked especially if not configured with MFA, or a user clicks a phishing email etc.
The two options I can think of are:

1. If its Windows Server, it should Remote Desktop. I think Remote Desktop allows up to 2 sessions in separate desktops without an additional license but its long since i've worked on it.

2. Use the cloud drive like you're saying. But again, security is important. It should be locked-down so only the users who need to work on it can access it, logging into the cloud-drive (Dropbox, Box, iCloud, Google Drive etc) should only be possible if MFA is turned on as well.

If there's apps pulling from those documents however, also be careful as some legacy apps break badly when another process reads/writes to the same file.

If it's a Windows system, Remote Desktop is what you need..

Just make sure it's properly secured..

Or, VPN and file sharing
Zerotier works very easily to achieve this as well, without difficult vpn configs

2 is what I am thinking, just don't know how I would make it that only the 3 of us can log in and access that drive.

Legacy apps are a pain, which should not be an issue.

Thanks

Get a refurbished mini PC for R5-7K and stop exposing your POS server to the world so you can do office work on it?

Da Boss, he not have ears ...

Have you made it clear that its nearly impossible to secure a server exposed like that and if someone wants in they will eventually get in?
That can mean a loss of everything on that server, banks withdrawing payment systems and possibility of fines.
R7k seems like a small price to pay.

Hell no.

Who still suggests this noise?

Until everything's encrypted with zero backups. That was some damned good advice

Also, pay someone qualified. Roll your own is never a good idea.

WAF>certified gateway>MFA auth>NPS>RD

Does not sound like Office apps should be anywhere near this environment either

His attitude, is, it works, not spending more money ... , end of story. Greeks ... :(

I would be very happy, if I could put a laptop down at work, connect to the network, and just work, so would the other manager, but yeah, bring a laptop to work, and full blown paranoia kicks in. :( :(

If it’s a “server” it should support multiple users at once.

If it doesn’t then it’s not really a server so start by fixing that first.
