Hi,

I'm new to ADSL. I would like to connect to my computer at home while at work during the day. How can I do this seeing that when I request the ip address it gives something like 10.0.0.1.

Thanks,

@ gugu - where are you located?

You'll need to do the following :

1. Create an ADSL PPPoE connection on your computer. Test it, and verify that you can control the modem this way. This is important for the dyndns updater client to work properly. Call it telkomadsl if you want to.

2. Register an account for you at dyndns.org (a free service). Create a host and give it a name, such as gugulethu.kicks-ass.com (or whatever you prefer). You'll need to activate your account before you can add a host. Keep in mind that free accounts can only have one host at a time.

3. Next, download the dyndns updater client from dyndns.org - this utility works excellent and is free.

4. Next, install the dyndns updater client, and populate it with the information from step (1) [connection name such as telkomadsl] and (2).

5. The dyndns updater client will now connect and update your host on the dyndns database.

You should be able to vnc or remote desktop in to your PC should you have the correct firewall ports open.

IMPORTANT !!! - Always have a good firewall and antivirus program on your PC at all times! You're basically opening your computer to world+dog...

I agree with The_Librarian apart from the pppoe connection. Not that his method is wrong but I do things differently.

I have a static ip assigned to the computer I want to control. and I use port forwarding to direct all the traffic aimed at the required ports to that specific IP. That way the pc is still afforded the protection of the router firewall.

You should be able to find the port forwarding info at http://www.portforward.com/

also . . . . my router will handle the dyndns.org part so its possible yours will too. :)

hehe!

Duh! But can I actually control my desktop remotely like VNC or Remote Admin?

:)

AFAIK there is no google remote desktop app. Rather I think he was suggesting that the interested party should go to google.com and do a search for remote desktop. :)

Remote Desktop can be enabled by right-clicking on My Computer, choosing the "Remote" tab and enabling "Remote Desktop".

Disable Remote Assistance, as you won't be using it.

Make sure the account you want to use with Remote Desktop have a password, otherwise Remote Desktop will refuse to work with that specific account. Create or add the account you want to use.

Note that Remote Desktop is only available on WinXP and better. (not sure about the home edition tho... - but there is also UltraVNC).

Its not available on XP home, I have to use VNC for XP home PCs. XP prof remote desktop works great.

just beware of where you are connecting from. If you are at work trying to connect to home it may not work even with all the correct ports setup etc because your work firewall is blocking the RDP port, either incoming or outgoing. I have this problem.
