I wonder if anyone here has tried this. I would like to connect to the Mini at home from my work machine (Linux). Apple Remote Desktop is just VNC, but the server gives the following error:

Code:
VNC server supports protocol version 3.889 (viewer 3.3)
VNC connection failed: Incompatible Version.

From what I could find online this is wrong - the is no 3.889 protocol and it uses stock protocols.

What I can't figure out is how to get the VNC clients to ignore this error and connect anyway?

What VNC viewer are you using and what options are you using?

Hi,
You can have a look at the following website; www.logmein.com
They have a client for Mac Tiger and Leopard as the machine being controlled and the machine that is doing the controlling only needs a web browser (Firefox works well)
The tool is free and works really well.

I haven't used a linux desktop in ages, but isn't there an option for any of those vnc clients to tell it to ignore protocol mismatches?

If not, your best then is to use a different vnc server on your mac.

That's what I thought too but I cannot find such an option anywhere. Can't find a solution in google either, which means it's probably not possible :)

Actually, I take that back - I saw a screenshot of an Ubuntu desktop with and OSX desktop in a window. But I'm guessing that may have been an older version of either.

OK, I figured it out. The configuration in OSX is a bit misleading. In the Sharing --> Remote Desktop secion there's a box that says "Enable VNC client with this password" or something such. Which I didn't think was necessary since I already had a valid user with password set up. Turns out if you enable this, it works after restarting the Mac.

Only problem is leaving the session open for a while makes the session hang at some point, and after that you can't connect again. Have to restart the Mac again (thank you ssh...).

There is also the "Screen Sharing" (as opposed to "Remote Management" option which also uses VNC.
