Remote for XBMC

Can anyone help me?

I have a Harmony 300 remote and would like to use it on XBMC.

What TV tuner/card will work with it? I have KWorld TV Tuner (Lire) but cannot get it to work.

What are you using? I know people buy R50 cards just for the remote, which is what I want to do.
 
Can't you just use an IR receiver and then a program like eventghost (I think that's what it's called)

I use a PS3 Bluray remote, bluetooth dongle and a program called Blumote. Works like a charm :) Then I got the newer US PS3 Bluray remote which also has IR and I use that to control the TV.

First and foremost, you need a IR receiver that is compatible with MS Media Center (for either Windows or Linux).
eg. This will work: http://www.takealot.com/computers/c...ol-for-mce-media-center-edition-black,7273135

Then when you configure the Harmony 300 you need to assign a button to a Windows Media Center receiver, and tada it will work with XBMC. Thats how I do it on Linux, I didn't install any funny software nothing, it just worked out of the box.

ps. I don't know how well that specific receiver work, I have a receiver built-in on my HTPC case which is a MCE compatible receiver, using my Harmony 300 with it, after my Harmnoy 700 was stolen (still miss it). However in my experience, the Harmony remotes work much better than the original I got thinking about signals strength and angles at which it work.

BTW, wasn't it you that were running that TiVO site a few years ago? Or am I smoking my socks :)
 
I also prefer to use a wireless keyboard as XBMC was designed around one so it gives you complete control. If you do want to go for a remote option then I would suggest you take a look at the Flirc http://flirc.tv/ which is available from these guys locally http://www.procsum.co.za/

They even have support for it in the Logitech Harmony programming software now so its pretty easy to setup. I use mine with a Flirc and a Harmony 1100 and it works perfectly. I was using a receiver from a Compro kit before and found it was very slow and often missed signals but the Flirc has given me no problems.

+1 I have this same setup. I bought the compro k300 just to get a IR receiver and then setup my Harmony 900 to work with it. I then use autohotkey to switch between xmbc and wmc.
 
Whatever you do, make 100% sure that the IR receiver that you purchase is RC6 compliant. I was bitten twice this way, and while the one works, it takes some serious customisation to get right. XBMC no longer requires Eventghost and the like with a proper RC6 compliant remote. It simply requires inputting the correct device into the remote...

Hi Nick_K,

Is the Flirc that much better than the compro receiver. It does have a bit of lag but was not sure if it was the receiver or the RF extensions on the Harmony remote.
 
Hey Snapkop, the Flirc was definately much better for me than the Compro, specifically with regards to response time. I also found that the Compro often seemed to miss commands that I was sending but the Flirc doesn't.

I have always used the same Harmony remote so I can only attribute the difference to the receiver.
 
For both my xbmc setups I use xbox 360 remotes with the wireless receivers and I'm very happy with it, will never use a normal remote again.
 
Flirc is great!

Picked up another one yesterday for my brother device ... fast, responsive and nice range. Plus it uses any remote - so old DSTV etc
 
I downloaded the XBMC Remote on my Ipad Mini (Wifi only) last night, configured it on my Wifi network, it was the easiest thing to set up... And i must say, it is so awesome, it has like all your content in separated by tabs on top like "Movies, Music, Videos, TV Shows and Pictures" then it has thumbnails for your files, and you can literally play your content just by clicking on the thumbnail, its awesome, its like all futuristic and *****, it even allows you to play the trailer of the movie 1st, and has a synopsis of the movie on the iPad, it even goes so far as telling you (for the TV Series) in the synopsis, it tells you who's in that episode specifically... Really awesome!

Better than on my Samsung Tab 2 - with Yatse, its basically just a controller, has pretty much the same "Type of" feature that allows you to play the file from the Tab, but somehow when i click on it, it just wont run...
