Hi All,

My parents live in New Zealand and frequently have PC issues which I try to help them with over the phone. If any of you have ever tried helping a 65+ year old parent with PC issues over the phone, you'll know what an impossible task that is :wtf:

Can anyone recommend a free tool I can use to gain remote access to their PC. The requirements are:
- Easy for them to install and setup initially (since I will be helping them install it over the phone)
- Easy for them to get running each time they need help
- Ability for me to do absolutely anything for them remotely: Install and setup applications, setup webcams, debug, admin access etc
- Free

Thanks for any suggestions.

Teamviewer

I have used it to help a cousin who was in the UAE so it should work for your needs.

Teamviewer is the gold standard and, for your needs (only their PC to work on), pretty much the only choice. You want to get a full installation done, with a strong perma-password, which gives you access at any time and, even better, requires no intervention on their side beyond them telling you they need help again. Bonuses that come with it are in-client (text) chat facility and, though I've never used it, I think it does voice too (hardware required of course)).

But to start, get them to down load the quickstart edition as it requires nothing more for them to do than download and run the file to give you them a partner ID for you to connect to. Which will be enough for you to do the full install, set the password, etcetera.

That post will change your life :)

The only thing I can add is that when you log in for the first time (or if you can somehow explain to them while they're doing the download), copy/save the TeamviewerQS.exe file to the Desktop, so that in future, you don't have to go through the whole download/search process each time - they can just double click the desktop icon and off you go.

Case closed!

Cool thanks for the suggestions. This should make life a whole lot easier
