Hi all, so I discovered netflix and like many people I am hooked. No wonder the company are posting record profits each year. Once they get you to sign up and see whats on offer you are not likely to cancel the subscription

In any case my main issues is most of what I see has black bars above and below. Is there a way to "stretch" the image to fill the screen. I have been trying some chrome extensions - but it seems to be hit and miss. Perhaps someone can recommend a good one or offer an alternative/solution.

So its not as easy as pressing "A" like I do on VLC and have what I am watching stretched? Came across some extension and yea it stretches the image which in turn crops part of the film.

I suppose it's theoretically possible, but why would you want to cut part of the movie off? :D

Get a bigger monitor!

I have an ultrawide - 25inch

I figured out though that pressing A on VLC changes the aspect ratio to 16.9 (which should be standard) so thats what i essentially want to achieve on netflix. Force that aspect ratio as then (chances are) everything will fill the screen.

Drives me nuts.

Almost all TV is 16:9 and most movies are letterbox, including the NF produced ones.

I basically us NF for TV and I pirate the movies.

So you want to see less of the movie but the parts you do see you want to be bigger?

changing aspect ratio does not cut out anything - cropping does. IN this instance I just want to change aspect ration so that the movie fills the screen - thats all. all else is fine, playback is great on sub standard internet - no issues with anything else but grinds me to watch stuff with black bars and almost all media should be in 16.9 in any case. Surely there has to be a way to do it without harming any penguins in the process.

Why am I seeing black bars on the movie or TV show I'm watching?
Some TV shows and movies on the Netflix service may be bordered by black bars, often called wings or letterbox. These black bars are due to the aspect ratio the TV show or movie was filmed in - if you're seeing them, it means the title was filmed in an aspect ratio that isn't a perfect fit for your screen. For example, some titles are shot in a format that is wider than your screen, so rather than stretching the picture, black bars are placed above and below it. Some ultra-wide screens can also be wider than certain titles, so if you have a 21:9 screen or wider, black bars may be placed above, below, and to either side of the video to maintain the title's aspect ratio.
Before HDTVs became popular, most TV shows were shot in 4:3 aspect ratio. High-definition programming is shot in 16:9. Because most newer screens are now HD, the black bars are used to fill the additional space instead of stretching the picture to fit your screen.

So you want to stretch the aspect ratio of the movie to fit the screen?

Anyone remember the old cowboy movies. When they had the opening title and credits the movie was always stretched so the actors were stick thin and distorted. Faces lopsided.

Lol its actually not that bad. I am also trying to figure out if I am the only one with this problem as all the stuff I am checking out cannot be having black bars. Something amiss somewhere.

It's because your screen is 21:9 not 16:9.

Google 21:9 Netflix and see what people suggest.

Thanks - as a newbie at this whole thing I am finding out some details that are killing the whole enjoyment/experience. The catalogue that we are offered here locally is so devoid of all the good stuff. So in addition to finding an aspect ratio workaround I need to also find means and ways to see stuff set for folks up north. Perhaps I am just too particular.

Like I said I am new to all this so I'm encountering all these small details as I further explore the platform. I just may get a 16.9 screen but I have a feeling I am just scratching the surface and more is yet to come.

I am still testing out a number of things (catalogue issue sorted) - I have a TV however I am looking at getting a TV box to use with that. Have my eye on the Mi Box while its still on R1099 special this week. But in the interim I am checking out Netflix on my daily driver Macbook hooked up to an external LG ultrawide.

Then it's not really fair to judge Netflix on issues specific to your 21:9 aspect ratio and if you want US Netflix you have to get a DNS service.
