Remove Password requirement and settings from laptop

Hi

I inherited a HP Elitebook laptop from the company I worked at when they went under.

I have to log in with a password every time I start up or after some inactivity (5mins) after pressing alt+ctrl+del.

I would like to remove the password requirement and other restrictions placed on it by the administrator at the time. I do not have the administrator password. My user name also come up as "administrator" in the User Accounts (Control Panel) but some changes such as screen saver settings and when the laptop locks after inactivity are greyed out so I cannot change.

Can I just delete the Administrator user from User Accounts?

I do not want to mess up the laptop and lose all my data if it suddenly gets locked or something.

It runs Windows 7 Professional.

Please advise
 
You need to remove the computer from the Domain, for this you need a Domain Admin account and password.

As you said you do not have this, so a backup and then system recovery or windows re installation is in order.
 
Thanks. I obviously do not have the Windows CDs, do I need them for system recovery? I have the installation key (under the battery).

You can copy files from anywhere or borrow the disc from someone. As far as I know, as long as you use your own key it should still be considered a genuine installation.

Domain removal can be done with a local admin account too :)
 
Why not just use a windows SAM hack disc like hiren bootdisc to reset and remove rules? There are also apps to remove GPO settings.

That would be MUCH easier.

If you have a non-domain admin account log into it,then remove from domain
If not,use a password reset disk like ntpasswd to reset and enable a local admin user account,then login and remove from the domain
 
be careful about removing the pc from the domain without first backing up.
Any domain\username files and folders may be compromised.
 
Was just checking my external HD's to see where I have enough space. Would hate to lose all. Thanks.
