Hi,

Hope i can get guidance from experts here.
I have an Eskom rural connection - paying Network, admin fees etc. which make up 90% of my bill.
Looking to go completely off grid - but how or can I have Eskom remove my meter and connection.
Have heard it can be done, Have heard it is not legal.....

Need a real answer before I invest in a system to replace them completely and then end up having to pay them anyway.
If it is possible How do I do this.... Eskom as expected does not reply when I have emailed this question on multiple occasions.

Not sure what the difficulty is?

Just stop paying.

If it makes you feel better, send them a letter by registered post informing them that you no longer need their services.

Then stop paying.

Do you do take the same approach with your car / cellphone contract etc?

Phone them and tell them you don't need the service any more.

Contact them for final account, tell them you want to disconnect the point, effective such and such a date, you want their transformer removed please. Install your solar or other backup, pay your bill and bob's your uncle.

This was the route I took. They sent 2 x 4wd Merc trucks with 2 staff each, 1 Cruiser with 2 staff, 1 x safety guy in his own bakkie to do the job. 7 guys to do – at best – a 4 person job.

I guess you have never heard of "backup"

8 guys if you include yourself, the Supervisor

I'm prepaid and the municipality take money every month for 'infrastructure', so depending where you are you might have a regular payment on your rates bill to stop as well.

Municipalities have become reluctant to do this because they charge a levy for the connection. You have to request from your municipality to remove the connection, they might still do this if it is rural zoning.
