Removing read-only from application folder

Our application has an 'update' folder on which the read-only flag needs to be removed. On a particular windows xp sp3 machine the flag re-appears directly after removing it.

as possible solutions but it does not work.

Any ideas ?

(I have not tried to remove the permission programmatically yet, that may also be a solution)

I often use attrib -r -h -s /s /d e:\*.*

Works every time.
