The new Renault 5 Prototype has been revealed, previewing an upcoming electric city car inspired by the original R5.

As a reminder, the Renault 5 was produced from 1972 to 1996, over two generations with more than 5,5 million units built.

The French firm says the new Renault 5 Prototype allows the company to “reconnect” with its past. Describing the prototype as a “cute” city car, Renault claims the production version will “democratise” the electric vehicle in Europe.

“The design of the Renault 5 Prototype is based on the R5, cult model of our heritage. This prototype simply embodies modernity, a vehicle relevant to its time: urban, electric, attractive,” said Gilles Vidal, Renault’s design director.

Style-focused electric city car forms part of Renault's push to launch seven EVs by 2025

Renault has confirmed that it will launch a new version of the popular 5 as an electric hatchback, which is set to go on sale in the future as part of a major new plan to revive the firm’s fortunes.

The new Renault 5 Prototype takes styling and design cues from the Clio’s predecessor that Renault produced from 1972 to 1985. It's set to be one of 14 new models – including seven fully electric vehicles – that the French brand will launch by 2025.

It will be joined by a new electric version of the Renault 4 supermini in the firm’s future line-up.

The French firm revealed the machine during the unveiling of the ‘Renaulution’ strategic plan devised by new boss Luca de Meo this morning. The 5 Prototype city car will be a key part of Renault’s push for 30% of its sales to be of electric vehicles by 2025.

I like. Those flared rear wheel arches and the square squatness remind me of the V6 Clio. Nice.

(but being a EV, there's no gear to speak of, or exhaust)

mom had the old one, missing reverse lights, and full of rust,

dont think she will like this, too ghetto for her.
 
Hells bells, I put this a very very close second to the Honda e in terms of looks.

If they bring the production version out and it looks 90% like this, they'll have a winner in the looks department.
