Renault Austral

Renault Austral: Kadjar successor confirmed for UK in 2023

All-new mid-size SUV brings bold new look, upmarket interior and hybrid powertrains

The all-new Austral SUV, the replacement for the Renault Kadjar, will be sold in the UK in 2023, Autocar has learned.

The model, which was previously confirmed for a launch in Europe, will bring bold new styling, a drastically enhanced kit list and all-electrified powertrains in a bid to "win back" buyers in the crucial crossover segment.

Prices for and specifications for UK sales have not yet been confirmed, but deliveries will start from the middle of next year.

Positioned as a rival to the Ford Kuga and Toyota RAV4, it's the first Renault to use the new third-generation CMF-CD platform, co-developed with Alliance partners Mitsubishi and Nissan, which can accommodate a range of electrified drivetrains.

The Austral will be sold with a choice of two full-hybrid systems, pairing a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor for combined outputs of 157bhp and 196bhp.

Renault claims this set-up can muster as much as 61.4mpg on the WLTP combined test cycle while emitting just 105g/km of CO2.

There's also a mild-hybrid petrol option that Renault posits as a "genuine alternative to diesel", given that it's claimed to be capable of 53mpg. This pairs the same engine with a 48V battery and a belt-integrated starter-generator for an electric boost under load and thus reduced petrol consumption.

2023 Renault Grand Austral to offer seven seats and hybrid power

Larger Austral relation is Renault's first seven-seater since the Grand Scenic

The Renault Grand Austral will join the French firm’s line-up in 2023, becoming its first seven-seat car since the Renault Grand Scenic, which went out of production earlier this year.

A prototype of the SUV, which is a larger version of the hybrid Renault Austral, has been photographed testing in Germany ahead of its 2023 launch. The new seven-seater is slightly longer than the standard Renault Austral but has a similar design, with the same headlight, bumper and grille style.

The rear window, meanwhile, is less steeply raked to provide additional head room for the third row of seats and the overhangs are more pronounced.

Renault has not commented on which powertrains will underpin the Grand Austral, but it will make use of the same CMF-CD platform as the regular car, with a focus on enhanced driving dynamics and optimised suspension.

It’s likely the Grand Austral will feature the same powertrains as its five-seat sibling, with a selection of mild hybrids on offer.

Renault Espace to return as extended, seven-seat Austral

Nissan X-Trail rival is slated for an unveiling in the spring – but it won't be sold in the UK

New images released by Renault appear to confirm that the new, sixth-generation Espace is an extended version of the Austral SUV.

The images, previewing the new Espace’s side profile and rear end, reveal a similar shape to the Austral as well as its front and rear lights.

The only difference appears to be the Espace’s raised and extended rear deck.

Renault has confirmed that the new model is 4.72 metres long, 0.19m longer than the Austral. This is also 0.04m longer than the new Nissan X-Trail, with which the new Espace shares its CMF-CD platform.

As with the X-Trail, the Espace will be offered in five-seat and seven-seat configurations, with the former trading the third row for a more capacious boot.

All-new mid-size SUV replacing Kadjar brings upmarket interior and hybrid powertrains

The Renault Austral will be priced from £34,695 when it arrives in the UK later this year, the brand has confirmed.
