Renault Clio Accessory Belt - Can it be delayed?

A friend of mine services his own cars, he told me to just bring it over and "we" can do the belt, plugs, oil and filters - i just need to but the parts. But man.. I don't know there's a reason we are supposed to service at dealers lol. If something goes wrong at least they take all the risk.

Do your services at the dealership so you can get the stamp in the book.

Do you brakes and other extras that the dealer just overcharges for somewhere else that is reliable...preferably not a friend who is a mechanic "on the side".

Accessory Belt is listed as 115,200km (72,000 miles) or 6 years.

Limited info there I'm now also not sure if that belt is the main timing belt or not as there is no mention of a timing belt anywhere.

But I would highly advise checking your own manual, although it's probably in the car which isn't with you.

It appears the accessory belt is something like a serpentine belt on the alternator that drives the electrical accesories.
This clio will definitely have a cam belt. No need to change either at 38000km.

It has a chain. :)

Believe me I was as surprised but you can Google it yourself.

I phoned renault to double-check the cam belt, the service dept said the car has a chain, not a belt. Only the "accessories" belt needs to be changed.

Almost enough reason to buy a Renault.

Then again my father in law has just been quoted almost 50k to sort out his Mercedes C-Class for a chain replacement at a mere 150k km so one has to ponder if the chain is really all that compared to just doing a cambelt every 120k.

In-law just had to replace the chain in his Sandero (same motor as the Clio)
95 000km on the clock with full service history and Renault quoted nearly R10k to do the job.

Ended up buying the parts from them for R3k and fitted elsewhere.

Yeah granted that 50k includes some big service items like discs and pads as well but still.

The 10k for your average cambelt job or much less privately seems like a safer bet.

Then again the chain should have done 300k before giving ****.
 
So what i've read on forums the accessory belt "should" be changed after 5 years if mileage is low primarily due to wear - however its not entirely necessary.

Today I phoned McCarthy Renault Woodmead and asked for a quote on a 5-year service for a Clio IV but not the accessory belt as I'll leave it for a few more months.

The service guy was rude as anything and said "Well if you don't mind paying R13 000 when your accessory belt breaks and damages the timing chain thats fine sir go ahead".
I tried asking how the accessory belt could take out the timing chain and he just cut me off and said "so should I book the car or not?"

Its amazing that we actually pay these people for their bad service...

Yes, it has a "lifetime" chain.

I'm also due for the "V" belt service on my 2013 Clio and am looking at roughly 7K, including the yearly service. Eina !!!!

Because its robbery.

I was quoted R3800 at a Bosch center but apparently i've heard from the sales people that when you try trade in the car if it wasnt services by "renault dealers" it can lose value a lot. Dunno how true it is
 
Anyone here who has serviced their Renault at Renault east rand ?
Any bad experiences ?

I usually service at Renault Fourways, but don,t feel like driving all the way out there.

I Bought my Megane at Route 24, but it only had one or two services there before I moved to Benoni, the rest of the services were done at East Rand. Great service, they never did a single dodgy thing and I bought some spares from them over the years as well, including windscreen wipers which on my model were dealer only. Overall, 9/10.
